“The Sun is Also a Star” is a recent movie that was released based on the original book. The book and movie both have the same plot: Tasha has one day left in New York since she is being deported the next day. Daniel’s parents topple expectations onto him, and as a curious secret poet, he encounters Tasha. Through his interest and persistence, they spend the one day they have together and falling in love as their goal. Do they fall in love? Does Tasha get deported? How will Daniel handle that? What happens in the end?

The book was written by Nicola Yoon, #1 New York Times Best Selling Author, and has written other major books like Everything, Everything. The book goes well into detail than the movie and reads both Tasha’s and Daniel’s lives and thought processes. Natasha, or Tasha, Kingsley is always a realist and ‘doesn’t believe in fate, fairy tales, or love at first sight. Daniel Bae, on the other hand, is a tragic romantic at heart and sees everything as an omen. When they cross paths, the universe makes them spend the one day they have together and determines their futures as well.

Ry Russo-Young directed the movie with Tracy Oliver and Nicola Yoon as the writers. The film was in the making for almost one year since June 2018. It is a beautiful masterpiece with an attractive cast and with lead actors, Charles Melton as Daniel Bae and Yara Shahidi as Tasha Kingsley. The movie has had many positive reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film was given a 52% on the Tomatometer by 73 critics, and 45% of the audience liked it. The New York Times concluded that it was a fantastic movie about teens and fate and how it can tangle into love — claiming that regardless of their complications throughout their day, they still manage to spend the day happily.

Overall, the movie and book are one of Nicola Yoon’s best works and attracts both teen and adult audiences.  The storyline has twists and turns to surprise the audience and keep them on the edge of their seats to find out if Daniel and Natasha end up together. It is a definite movie to see in the theaters and will be sure to enforce high emotions.
