  • Attention everyone! Taft is thinking about offering a new AP class next year – AP Art History! In AP Art History, you’ll learn about art from around the world. You’ll find out how art is related to culture. We will study the ancient Egyptians, the ancient Mayans, Renaissance Europe, and art from all over Africa and Asia. In AP Art History, you find out about art from Stone Age cave paintings all the way up to modern art. Come sign up to show your interest in AP Art History at the “AP, Honors, and Creative Fair” on Friday, February 21st at lunch in Taft Hall. You can also talk to Mrs. Cleary about AP Art History in Room D224.

 

  • Attention all Seniors! We are now accepting applications for the Senior Fashion and Talent Show. If you have a talent and would like to showcase it, go to bit.ly/tafttalent . If you would like to walk in the fashion show, go to bit.ly/taftfashion . Applications are due by February 28th!

  • Congratulations to Taft’s Deaf/Hard of Hearing Academic Bowl team for making it to the quarterfinals at the regional competition hosted by Gallaudet University in Washington D.C. We are very proud of your hard work and accomplishements.

  • Seniors the results are in! The top 2 Seniors for each category will be posted outside C213 after 3rd period today. White Studios will be here on Wed Feb 26 to photograph the top 2 Seniors. Summonses will go out early next week with the time and location.

  • Happy Black History Month Taft! Out this day in Black History, Smokey Robinson was born in 1940. Also, John Singleton – the first African American director to be nominated for an academy award – was nominated for best director and best screenplay for his first film Boyz N the Hood.

  • Happy Black History Month everyone! On this day in Black History, renowned rapper Dr. Dre was born in 1965. Happy Birthday to Dr.Dre. Mountzion Baptist Church, the largest African American congregation was organized in Seattle on this day. All power to the people!

 

  • Taft Speech and Debate scored this weekend at the Cal Lutheran Institutional. The Parliamentary Debate team of Nick Catalano and Lailee Golesorkhi took 4th place and Lily Tocher took 4th in Oratorical Interpretation. Go Taft Speech and Debate!

  • Good morning Taft students and staff. Selah and Kylie are here to remind you that today is THE day. Taft’s first ever Mental Health and Wellness Resource Fair is taking place today during period 4 and lunch. Period 4 teachers who signed up have received their papers. Come check out the fair, visit the booths, play some games. We have fun activities, tons of giveaways and you can enter a raffle to win some great things. See you there!

 

  • Happy Black History Month everyone! On this day in Black History, the First Black pro Basketball team, “The Renaissance” was organized in 192. Today was also the day Shirley Chisholm became the first black woman elected to Congress! Power to the people.

 

  • Tomorrow at lunch in room F136 we will have a UTLA Candidate Forum. Pizza and drinks will be provided.

 

  • Senior Superlative voting is now open! Go to bit.ly/2020superseniors to cast your vote. Voting will close on Monday 2/17 at 8:00 am. Remember this is for Seniors only. Any underclass people voting will not be counted and is subject to disciplinary action. The list for the nominees for each category is posted in upper C by Ms. Avena’s room.

  • Happy Black History Month! On this day of Black History, the NAACP was founded in 1909 in New York City. This is also Lincoln’s birthday! Happy birthday Abe Lincoln!

 

  • Attention Suniors and Seniors! Today is the last day to turn in Powderpuff paperwork. It’s going to be a great game with great people so you don’t want to miss out. You can pick up paperwork in D118. Better see you all there!

 

  • Hey guys. Today there’s a Black student union meeting at lunch in room H262 as usual! Hope to see you all there!

  • Happy Black History Month everyone! On this day of Black History, Nelson Mandela, leader of the movement for democracy in South Africa, was released from prison in 1990 after 27 years; and Clifford Alexander became the first black secretary of state in 1977.

  • The UCLA trip with Ms. Brownell is tomorrow! Please meet at the front of the school by 7:50 am tomorrow or you may be left behind. Wear layered clothing and comfortable walking shoes. You can bring snacks, drinks, and money to buy fast food. You can bring electronics and your backpack. See you tomorrow at the front of the school by 7:50 am!

 

  • Attention 2020 Graduating Seniors: Diploma name cards will be handed out in your 3rd-period classes today. Your name is printed on the card the way it will be printed on your diploma. Carefully check your name for accuracy and if you have a correction neatly fill out the card and return it to the counseling office by February 21st. The roster of names is also posted outside the counseling office for you to review.

 

  • Behind an unbelievable team defense, the girl’s varsity basketball team won their biggest game of the year, beating city champions Granada Hills last Friday. The final score was 41-38! Rosa Callejas had team highs with 19 points and 5 steals. Gabby Quintana had 10 rebounds and Audrey Quintana had 7 assists. The girls qualify for the open division playoffs Thursday night at Palisades. Great Job Girls Basketball!
