Healthy Food for Dorms

Living in a small dorm is definitely an adjustment for many students. Many college students opt for cheap snacks such as ramen and other junk food. According to Health.com, 70% of college students gain weight and some even nickname it the “Freshman 15.” This is mostly caused by fattening late night snacking, drinking, and a lack of exercise. College students should be more mindful of their health in college and here are some easy snacks and recipes one can make in their dorm room. There are many inexpensive ways to stay healthy throughout college.
- DIY Trail Mix
Trail mix is a good caloric, healthy fat, and protein dense snack. It is good as an in-dorm snack.
- 3/4 cup raw pecans
- 3/4 cup raw cashews (I toast mine in the oven for 10 mins at 350 degrees F)
- 1/2 cup raw sunflower seeds
- 1/2 cup pumpkin seeds
- 1/2 cup unsweetened dry cherries
- 1/2 cup dry raisins
- 1/2 cup chopped dark chocolate
- 1/4 tsp sea salt
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- pinch of nutmeg
Eggs in a Nest
Ingredients:
- 2 slices of bread
- 2 eggs
- Cookie cutter
Instructions:
- Using your cookie cutter, make a whole in the middle of the two slices of bread
- Crack an egg into the hole of each piece of bread
- Microwave for a minute until egg is cooked
Cinnamon Apple Oatmeal
- 1 apple
- 1 tbsp butter
- 1 medium banana
- cinnamon
- Instant oatmeal
Directions:
- Cut up apples and put into bowl
- Add butter and cinnamon into the same bowl
- Microwave for one minute, after mix ingredients in the bowl
- Microwave for another 30 seconds then let it chill
- Cut bananas and prepare instant oatmeal in a separate bowl
- Add cinnamon apples and bananas into the oatmeal bowl
There are obviously many healthy recipes that can be made with just using a microwave and a mini fridge. Anyone can stay healthy in a college environment. Staying mindful of your choices will form healthy habits and a good lifestyle.
