Toreador Teacher Spotlight: Ms. Casas

Briana Alcaraz, Design Editor, Writer

Ms. Casas is a teacher who has been working at Taft since the Fall of 2017. You may not have met her yet unless you have her college career class or her English class. But she is an exciting addition to our Staff Faculty! For our first edition of the paper, Ms. Casas is our Teacher Spotlight!

Her experience at Taft, so far, has been great, but it did take her a bit of getting used to. Although she may be used to this school, she is still not completely used to trying to help the students that don’t want to be helped. Ms. Casas has stumbled upon a difficult experience during her time here and that is helping the students that don’t want to learn. Trying to make them learn something is just too difficult because there is no way you can motivate them. Her teaching style should be enough to motivate someone.

Teachers always carry their weaknesses, Ms. Casas’ weakness would be saying no to her students. She believes she is too nice enough to say no. She tries her hardest to be strict, but it is harder than she thought. If a student were to ask for an extra day to do some work it would be very, very hard to turn away and say no. Her teaching style is guided, she is a guiding teacher, but she also likes her kids to contextualize their knowledge and she lectures them very often. She is a role model, but she also needs her kids to try things for themselves.

Prior to becoming a teacher at Taft High School, Ms. Casas attended CSUN where she majored in English Literature and got her single subject teaching credential. She has always enjoyed working with people and helping them better understand concepts. CSUN was Ms.Casas’ choice in school because it was a local college and she had the opportunity to stay close to her family which is a good thing because she is family oriented. She is a hardworking teacher, but she is also a great sister. At the end of the day, Ms. Casas leaves when the bell rings usually to pick up her sisters and take them to their extracurricular classes. Something many of us can relate to. If you haven’t met Ms. Casas yet, take a detour to Upper M, she would love to meet you!
